KELUARGA BARTELS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kisah Hidup Keluarga Penemu Elang Jawa Dari Pasir Datar Ciparay Sukabumi, Sebuah Tragedi Ilmu Pengetahuan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bagi masyarakat Indonesia, Elang Jawa (Spizaetus bartelsi) hampir setara Badak Jawa, Badak Sumatera, Harimau Sumatera, Gajah Sumatera dan Orang Hutan. Popularitas ini menobatkan Elang Jawa menjadi satwa nasional sejak tahun1993. Namun jika kita bertanya siapakah penemu Elang Jawa? Bagaimaan kisah hidupnya? bagaimana hasil karya-karyanya? Sumbangsih apa yang telah diberikan bagi dunia ilmu pengetahuan Indonesia? Tentu sangat sedikit yang tahu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bartels merupakan nama (keluarga) penemu Elang Jawa yang telah menemukan 21 species baik berupa burung, kelelawar, dan tikus, 7 diantaranya masuk dalam Red List IUCN, serta 2 genus tikus-tikusan. Ribuan specimen dan telur burung koleksi pribadi \u201cdirampok\u201d oleh Ilmuwan Belanda dengan menggunakan jasa tentara Jepang, saat ini koleksi tersebut berada National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) Leiden, The Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meninggalkan Seorang Perempuan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Bartels Junior meninggal sebagai Rhomusa di Burma meninggalkan anak perempuannya yang baru berumur 5 tahun dan baru mengetahui makamnya 50 tahun kemudian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seluruh kisah tersebut tidak terlepas dari lokasi musium sekaligus rumah oleh keluarga Bartels di Pasir Datar Sukabumi yang saat ini menjadi Taman Nasional Gunung Gede Pangrango (TNGGP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saat ini terjadi salah persepsi tentang siapakah Bartels atau Max Bartels, yang ternyata merupakan dua orang yang berbeda yakni Max Eduard Gottlieb Bartels (24 January 1871-7 April 1936) atau MEG Bartels (ayah) dan Dr. Max Bartels (anak) (7 Juni 1902 \u2013 6 Oktober 1943).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pada mulanya nama Max Bartels telah MEG Bartels sang ayah gunakan dalam jurnal-jurnal ornitologinya sebagai nama singkatnya, namun setelah anak pertamanya lahir nama itu ia berikan kepada anak tertuanya. Untuk membedakan hasil karya ayah dan anak, beberapa peneliti terkenal seperti Edwin Stresemann, HJV Sody dan JH Becking membedakan mereka sebagai Max Bartels Sr (MEG) dan Max Bartels Jr. Dalam tulisan ini akan MEG Bartels gunakan sebagai Max Bartels Senior dan Dr. Max Bartels sebagai Max Bartels Junior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEG Bartels, berkebangsaan Jerman, adalah seorang Ornitholog yang lahir di kota Bielefeld Jerman dari seorang ayah yang bekerja sebagai arsitek. Ia merupakan anggota Deutsche Ornithologische Gesellschaft (Jerman Ornitolog Society) yang berpusat di Boon sejak tahun 1903. Tahun 1895, MEG Bartels (usia 24 tahun) ke Pulau Jawa untuk menghindari Wajib Militer di Jerman, selain itu MEG Bartels tertarik kehidupan alam liar terutama burung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEG Bartels bekerja di Perkebunan Teh \u201cPangrango\u201d Resort Pasir Datar, Sukabumi hingga tahun 1898 MEG Bartels menjadi Kepala Perkebunan tersebut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tanggal 19 Agustus 1901, MEG Bartels menikah dengan Angeline Cardine Henriette Maurenbrecher orang Belanda memiliki keahlian melukis, salah satu lukisannya berada di National Museum of Natural History Leiden. Hasil pernikahannya terlahir Dr. Max Bartels Jr (1902-1943), Ernst Bartels (1904-1976), dan Hans Bartels (1906-1997).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEG Bartels memiliki kegemaran mengoleksi specimen satwa terutama berbagai jenis burung dan telurnya, harimau jawa, macan tutul, tikus, tulang banteng dll tercatat sebagai koleksi Keluarga Bartels yang kini berada di National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) Leiden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beberapa nama burung, tikus dan tupai berhasil teridentifikasi berdasarkan koleksinya oleh karena itu nama Bartels (2)\/Max (3) \/Angeline (4) ia gunakan dalam nama latin satwa tersebut. Untuk menampung koleksinya tersebut MEG Bartels membangun sebuah museum koleksi di Pasir Datar, Sukabumi Taman Nasional Gunung Gede Pangrango.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
